What is the Lodging Management Program?

Hospitality is the fastest-growing industry in the United States and is facing a shortage of trained managers with lodging experience.  With more than 76,000 job openings for lodging and foodservice managers every year, your students are sure to find a position where they can develop a meaningful and exciting career.

The Lodging Management Program (LMP) provides teachers with everything needed to prepare their students to succeed in an industry that offers unlimited opportunities, including how to set up hospitality internships so they can apply what they learn.

The Lodging Management Program (LMP) is a school-to-career program developed by the American Hotel and Lodging Association Educational Foundation (AH&LAEF).  LMP is designed to introduce juniors and seniors to careers in the hospitality industry.  Through classroom activities, internships and comprehensive exams, students have the chance to earn national certification.

Educators Information

Whether your students are looking to enter the job market or making plans for college, the Lodging Management Program is a great first step.  Students are hired for internships by qualified lodging operations.  There they receive firsthand training from worksite mentors.  Back in the classroom, lessons and activities come alive as your students make real world connections.  Practical lively learning takes place both on the job and in the classroom.  With the Lodging Management Program, students get the chance to see just how bright their futures can be.

Students learn both lodging essentials and basic lodging management skills.

Some of the management skills developed include:

  • Hospitality Supervision
  • Food and Beverage Management
  • Basic Accounting Principles
  • Marketing
  • Managing Front Office Operations
  • Communications

Teacher Workshops

Teacher Workshops were developed to provide teachers the expertise that they need to go back to the classroom with the skills and knowledge to teach the Lodging Management Program.  The workshop is held in the summer at a host hotel.  The workshops are developed in a way that teachers get one-on-one experience with industry professionals.

Such activities that teachers develop are the following:

  • Front Desk Operations
  • Telephone Sales
  • Event Planning
  • Night Audit
  • Careers
